2 hadiths
Saʿd and al-Ḥimyarī together, from Ibrāhīm b. Mahziyār, from his brother, ʿAlī b. Mahziyār, from Faḍḍāla b. Ayyūb, from Abān b. ʿUthmān, from Ibn Abī ʿUmayr, from al-Ḥusayn b. Abī’l-ʿAlāʾ, from Abī ʿAbd Allāh عليه السلام. Al-Ḥusayn b. Abī’l-ʿAlāʾ narrated: “I said to him: “Can the Earth be without an Imam?” He said: “No.” I continued: “Can there be two Imams at one time?” He replied: “No, unless one of them is silent.” I asked: “Is the Imam cognisant of the Imam who comes after him?” He said: “Yes.” I followed up: “Is the Qāʾim an Imam?” He replied: “Yes. An Imam, the son of an Imam, who has already been taken as an Imam before that.”
Saʿd b. ʿAbd Allāh said: “Muḥammad b. al-Ḥusayn b. Abī’l-Khaṭṭāb narrated to us, from al-Ḥasan b. Maḥbūb, from ʿAlī b. Riʾāb, from Abī ʿAbd Allāh عليه السلام, that he spoke about the statement of Allāh عز وجل: ﴾The day when some of your Lord’s signs do come, faith shall not benefit any soul that had not believed beforehand﴿ [6:158]—so, he said: “The signs are the Imams, and the awaited sign is the Qāʾim عليه السلام. So, on that day « faith shall not benefit any soul that had not believed before » his rising with the sword, even if that soul had believed in the forefathers who preceded him عليهم السلام.”[1]
