Refer to tradition no. 46 of our book, which is on Abī’l-Ḥasan al-Riḍā’s (as) explicit textual designation of his son.[1] And tradition no. 94—the Tradition of the Tablet [2]—which includes: “And ʿAlī (al-Riḍā), My vicegerent and supporter…for I will gladden his eye with Muḥammad (al-Jawād), his son, who is his caliph after him. For he is the inheritor of My knowledge, the repository of My wisdom, the locus of My secret and My Divine authority upon My creatures. I have made Paradise his residence and granted him the right of intercession for seventy people of his household, all of whom had deserved the Fire. And I will seal (this) with felicity for his son, ʿAlī (al-Hādī), My vicegerent and supporter, the witness (for Me) among My creation and My trustee in regard to My revelations. From him I will derive the missionary (inviting people) to My path and the custodian of My knowledge, al-Ḥasan (al-ʿAskarī). Then, I will complete that through his son, a mercy to the worlds…etc.” Refer, also, to tradition no. 93—the Tradition of al-Khiḍr [3]—in which is: “And I bear witness, in regard to Muḥammad b. ʿAlī, that he is the upholder of ʿAlī b. Mūsā’s Divine ordinance. And I bear witness, in regard to ʿAlī b. Muḥammad, that he is the upholder of Muḥammad b. ʿAlī’s Divine ordinance. And I bear witness, in regard to al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī, that he is the upholder of ʿAlī b. Muḥammad’s Divine ordinance…etc.” And, in tradition no. 103:[4] “After al-Ḥasan and al-Ḥusayn, (it will be) among the descendants (of al-Ḥusayn), generation after generation.”
