Hadith 1

Saʿd, from ʿAlī b. Ismāʿīl, from al-ʿAbbās b. Maʿrūf, from ʿAlī b. Mahziyār, from al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī b. Faḍḍāl, who said: “Ismāʿīl b. ʿAmmār asked a question of the first Abā’l-Ḥasan (as),[1] so he said to him: “Has Allāh obliged the Imam to bequeath to and entrust the covenant to (his successor), before he departs from this world?,” so he replied: “Yes.” Ibn ʿAmmār then said: “Is it an obligation from Allāh?” The Imam replied: “Yes.”

Hadith 2

And from him, from Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. ʿĪsā and Muḥammad b. al-Ḥusayn b. Abī’l-Khaṭṭāb, from al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī b. Faḍḍāl and ʿAlī b. Asbāṭ, from ʿAbd Allāh b. Bukayr, from ʿAmrū b. al-Ashʿath, from Abī ʿAbd Allāh (as). Ibn al-Ashʿath narrated: “I heard him (Imam al-Ṣādiq) saying—and we were in the house with him, approximately twenty persons: “Perhaps you see that this ordinance belongs to a man from among us who assigns it wherever he wills?! No, by Allāh, it is a covenant from the Apostle of Allāh (sawa) characterised by explicit designation, from one man to another, until the Ordinance reaches its (final rightful) master.”

Hadith 3

And from him, from Aḥmad b. Muḥammad, from Muḥammad b. ʿAmrū b. Saʿīd, from Yaḥyā b. Mālik, from Abī’l-Ḥasan al-Riḍā (as). Yaḥyā b. Mālik narrated: “I asked him about the statement of Allāh (azwj): ﴾Indeed Allāh commands you to deliver the trusts to their [rightful] owners﴿ [4:58]. He said: “The Imam delivers (the trust of Imamate) to the (next) Imam.” Then he said: “O’ Yaḥyā, indeed it is not from him, by Allāh. It is but an order from Allāh.”

Hadith 4

ʿAbd Allāh b. Jaʿfar, from Abī’l-Qāsim al-Hāshimī, from ʿUbayd b. Qays al-Anṣārī, who said: “al-Ḥasan b. Samāʿa narrated to us, from Jaʿfar b. Samāʿa, from Abī ʿAbd Allāh (as), who said: “Jibraʾīl descended upon the Prophet (sawa) with a scroll from the sky. Allāh has never revealed any book like it, before or after it. Within it are seals of gold. Jibraʾīl said to the Prophet: “O’ Muḥammad! This is your testament to the electee of your family.” He replied: “O’ Jibraʾīl, who is the electee of my family?,” so he said: “ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib (as). Command him, at the time of your passing, to break a seal, then act upon what is in it.” So, when the Prophet (as) died, ʿAlī broke a seal and then acted upon what was in it, and he did not go beyond it. He then handed it over to al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī (as), who broke a seal, acted upon what was within it without going beyond it, and handed it over to al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī (as). He broke a seal, and found (inscribed) within it: Go out, with a people, towards martyrdom, and sell your soul to Allāh,[1] so he acted upon what was within it and did not go beyond it. He then handed it over to a man after him, who broke a seal and found therein: Maintain inconspicuousness, be silent, hold fast to your domicile, and worship your Lord until certainty comes to you.[2] Then, he handed it over to a man after him, who broke a seal and found therein: That you narrate traditions to the people and give them legal rulings, and spread the knowledge of your forefathers. So, he did as per what was within it and then handed it over to a man after him. He broke a seal, and found therein: That you narrate traditions to the people and give them legal rulings, prove the truthfulness of your father, and fear none but Allāh, for you are under Allāh’s protection and guarantee. And he handed the scroll over to a man after him,[3] and he handed it over to who was after him, and he to who was after him, until the Day of Resurrection.”
