ʿAbd Allāh b. Jaʿfar, from Abī’l-Qāsim al-Hāshimī, from ʿUbayd b. Qays al-Anṣārī, who said: “al-Ḥasan b. Samāʿa narrated to us, from Jaʿfar b. Samāʿa, from Abī ʿAbd Allāh عليه السلام, who said: “Jibraʾīl descended upon the Prophet صلى الله عليه وعلى آله with a scroll from the sky. Allāh has never revealed any book like it, before or after it. Within it are seals of gold. Jibraʾīl said to the Prophet: “O’ Muḥammad! This is your testament to the electee of your family.” He replied: “O’ Jibraʾīl, who is the electee of my family?,” so he said: “ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib عليه السلام. Command him, at the time of your passing, to break a seal, then act upon what is in it.” So, when the Prophet عليه السلام died, ʿAlī broke a seal and then acted upon what was in it, and he did not go beyond it. He then handed it over to al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī عليه السلام, who broke a seal, acted upon what was within it without going beyond it, and handed it over to al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī عليه السلام. He broke a seal, and found (inscribed) within it: Go out, with a people, towards martyrdom, and sell your soul to Allāh,[1] so he acted upon what was within it and did not go beyond it. He then handed it over to a man after him, who broke a seal and found therein: Maintain inconspicuousness, be silent, hold fast to your domicile, and worship your Lord until certainty comes to you.[2] Then, he handed it over to a man after him, who broke a seal and found therein: That you narrate traditions to the people and give them legal rulings, and spread the knowledge of your forefathers. So, he did as per what was within it and then handed it over to a man after him. He broke a seal, and found therein: That you narrate traditions to the people and give them legal rulings, prove the truthfulness of your father, and fear none but Allāh, for you are under Allāh’s protection and guarantee. And he handed the scroll over to a man after him,[3] and he handed it over to who was after him, and he to who was after him, until the Day of Resurrection.”
