Nubāta, who narrated: “I came to Amīr al-Muʾminīn, ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib (as), finding him engrossed in thought while marking the earth, whereupon I said: “O’ Amīr al-Muʾminīn, why do I see you engrossed in thought while marking the earth, have you developed a desire for it?” He replied: “No, by Allāh. I was not seeking anything of it, nor of the worldly life, not even for a day, ever. Rather, I was thinking about one who will be born of my backbone,[1] the eleventh of my descendants. He is the rightly guided one (Mahdī) who will fill the Earth with justice just as it had been full of iniquity and oppression. There will be for him an occultation and (ensuing) confusion, on account of which many peoples will be misguided, and others guided.” I asked: “O’ Amīr al-Muʾminīn, is that (truly) to be?,” so he replied: “Yes, just as it is that he is a created being. How could you (possibly) have knowledge of this matter, o’ Aṣbagh? Those are the chosen ones of this community, with the righteous ones of this lineage.” I followed up: “And what will be after that?,” to which he responded: “Allāh will do what He wills, for He has His intents, purposes and ends.”
