ʿAbd Allāh b. Jaʿfar al-Ḥimyarī, from Aḥmad b. Hilāl, from Ibn Maḥbūb, from Abī Ayyūb al-Khazzāz and al-ʿAlāʾ b. Razīn, from Muḥammad b. Muslim, who narrated: “I heard Abā ʿAbd Allāh (as) saying: “There are signs from Allāh (azwj), for the believers, that precede (the emergence of) the Qāʾim.” I asked: “What are they? May Allāh make me your sacrifice.” He responded: “That is (just as it is mentioned in) the statement of Allāh (azwj): ﴾We will surely test you﴿ [2:155]—as in, the believers before the Qāʾim’s (as) emergence, ﴾with a measure of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth, lives, and fruits; and give good news to the patient﴿.” He continued: “He will surely test them with something of fear, of the kings of such-and-such a dynasty in the twilight years of their sultanate, and of hunger, because of the steep prices of their goods.” ﴾And a loss of wealth﴿—he continued: “Stagnation in commerce and the scarcity of profits.” And a loss of lives—he said: “Widespread death.” And a loss of fruits—he commented: “Scarcity in yield from whatever was cultivated. ﴾And give good news to the patient﴿, at that time, of the hastening of the Qāʾim’s (as) emergence.” Then, he said to me: “O’ Muḥammad, this is its true interpretation. Allāh (taa) says: ﴾No one knows its interpretation except Allāh and those firmly grounded in knowledge.﴿” [3:7]
