Muḥammad al-ʿAṭṭār, from Ibn Abī’l-Khaṭṭāb, from al-Bizanṭī, who narrated: “Abū’l-Ḥasan (as) was asked: “By what signs is the Imam who succeeds an Imam recognised?” He said: “There are indications of the Imam; that he is the eldest of his father’s sons after him, that he possesses virtue, that when a traveller arrives in Medina and asks: “To whom did he bequeath?,” its people say: “To so-and-so,” and the Weapon is among us,[1] holding the same position as the Ark of the Covenant did among the Children of Israel. The Imamate goes with the Weapon, wherever it may be.”
