Chapter on the Legal Punishment for Drinking Alcohol and Reports Regarding Singing and Amusements

Commentary #4

يَعْنِي بِقِرَاءَةِ الْقُرْآنِ وَ الزُّهْدِ وَ الْفَضَائِلِ الَّتِي لَيْسَتْ بِغِنَاءٍ فَأَمَّا الْغِنَاءُ فَمَحْظُورٌ.

This means through the recitation of the Quran, asceticism, and virtuous speech that is not considered singing. As for singing (ghinaʾ), it is strictly prohibited.
