Zīyārat ʿĀshūrāʾ

al-salāmu ʿalayka yā abā ʿAbdillāh.

Peace be upon you, O Abu Abd Allah.

al-salāmu ʿalayka yā ibna Rasūlillāh.

Peace be upon you, O son of the Messenger of Allah.

al-salāmu ʿalayka yā khiyarata Llāhi wa-bna khiyaratih.

Peace be upon you, O chosen one of Allah and son of His chosen one.

al-salāmu ʿalayka yā ibna amīri l-muʾminīna wa-bna sayyidi l-waṣiyyīn.

Peace be upon you, O son of the Commander of the Faithful and son of the master of the executors.

al-salāmu ʿalayka yā ibna Fāṭimata sayyidati nisāʾi l-ʿālamīn.

Peace be upon you, O son of Fatima, mistress of the women of all the worlds.

al-salāmu ʿalayka yā thāra Llāhi wa-bna thārihi wa-l-witra l-mawtūr.

Peace be upon you, O the vengeance of Allah and the son of His vengeance, and the unavenged, wronged one.

al-salāmu ʿalayka wa-ʿalā l-arvāḥi llatī ḥallat bi-fināʾika wa-anākhat bi-raḥlik.

Peace be upon you, and upon the souls that alighted in your courtyard and settled at your camp.

ʿalaykum minnī jamīʿan salāmu Llāhi abadan mā baqītu wa-baqiya l-laylu wa-n-nahār.

Upon you all, from me, be Allah’s peace forever, as long as I remain and night and day remain.

Yā ʾabā ʿabdillāhi, laqad ʿaẓumat al-muṣībatu bika ʿalaynā wa-ʿalā jamīʿi ahli al-samāwāti.

O Abu Abd Allah, indeed the calamity of your loss has been immense for us and for all the inhabitants of the heavens.

Falaʿana allāhu ʾummatan ʾassasat ʾasāsa al-ẓulmi wa-al-jawri ʿalaykum ahla al-bayti.

So may Allah curse the community that laid the foundation of oppression and injustice against you, O Ahl al-Bayt.

Wa-laʿana allāhu ʾummatan dafaʿatkum ʿan maqāmikum wa-ʾazālatkum ʿan marātibikumu allatī rattabakumu allāhu fīhā.

And may Allah curse the community that drove you from your station and removed you from the ranks in which Allah had placed you.

Wa-laʿana allāhu ʾummatan qatalatkum.

And may Allah curse the community that killed you.

Wa-laʿana allāhu al-mumahhidīna lahum bi-al-tamkīni min qitālikum.

And may Allah curse those who paved the way for them by giving them the means to fight you.

Yā ʾabā ʿabdillāhi, ʾinnī silmun li-man sālamakum wa-ḥarbun li-man ḥārabakum ʾilā yawmi al-qiyāmah.

O Abu Abd Allah, I am at peace with whoever is at peace with you, and at war with whoever is at war with you, until the Day of Resurrection.

Falaʿana allāhu ʾāla ziyādin wa-ʾāla marwāna.

May Allah curse the house of Ziyad and the house of Marwan.

Wa-laʿana allāhu banī ʾumayyata qāṭibatan.

And may Allah curse the Banu Umayyah, all of them.

wa-laʿana llāhu ibna Marjānah.

And may Allah curse the son of Marjanah.

wa-laʿana llāhu ʿUmara bna Saʿd.

And may Allah curse Umar ibn Sa‘d.

wa-laʿana llāhu Shimran.

And may Allah curse Shimr.

wa-laʿana llāhu ummatan asrajat wa-aljamat wa-tahayyaʾat li-qitālik.

And may Allah curse the community that saddled, bridled, and made ready to fight you.

yā Abā ʿAbdillāh, bi-abī anta wa-ummī, la-qad ʿaẓuma muṣābī bika.

O Abu Abd Allah, may my father and mother be your ransom—indeed, great is my affliction at your loss.

fa-asʾalu llāha lladhī akrama maqāmaka an yukrimanī bika wa-yarzuqanī ṭalaba thārika maʿa imāmin manṣūrin min āli Muḥammadin ṣallā llāhu ʿalayhi wa-ālih.

I ask Allah, who honored your station, to honor me through you and to grant me the seeking of your vengeance alongside a victorious Imam from the family of Muhammad, may Allah bless him and his Household.

allāhumma-jʿalnī wajīhan ʿindaka bi-l-Ḥusayni fī d-dunyā wa-l-ākhirah.

O Allah, make me honored in Your sight through al-Husayn in this world and the Hereafter.

yā sayyidī yā Abā ʿAbdillāh, innī ataqarrabu ilā llāhi wa-ilā rasūlihī wa-ilā amīri l-muʾminīna wa-ilā Fāṭimata wa-ilā l-Ḥasani wa-ilayka, ṣallā llāhu ʿalayka wa-ʿalayhim, bi-muwālātika wa-l-barāʾati min aʿdāʾika wa-mimman qātalaka wa-naṣaba laka l-ḥarba wa-min jamīʿi aʿdāʾikum, wa-bi-l-barāʾati mimman assasa l-jawra wa-banā ʿalayhi bunyānahū wa-ajrā ẓulmahū wa-jawrahū ʿalaykum wa-ʿalā ashyāʿikum.

O my master, O Abu Abd Allah, I seek nearness to Allah, to His Messenger, to the Commander of the Faithful, to Fatima, to al-Hasan, and to you—may Allah bless you and them—through my loyalty to you and my disavowal of your enemies, of those who fought you and waged war against you, and of all your enemies; and through my disavowal of those who founded injustice, built their edifice upon it, and inflicted their oppression and injustice upon you and upon your followers.

barīʾtu ilā llāhi wa-ilaykum minhum.

I disavow them before Allah and before you.

wa-ataqarrabu ilā llāhi thumma ilaykum bi-muwālātikum wa-muwālāti waliyyikum wa-l-barāʾati min aʿdāʾikum wa-mina n-nāṣibīna lakumu l-ḥarba wa-l-barāʾati min ashyāʿihim wa-atbāʿihim.

And I seek nearness to Allah, and then to you, through loyalty to you and loyalty to your wali, and through disavowal of your enemies and of those who waged war against you, and through disavowal of their partisans and followers.

innī silmun li-man sālamakum wa-ḥarbun li-man ḥārabakum wa-waliyyun li-man wālākum wa-ʿaduwwun li-man ʿādākum.

I am at peace with whoever is at peace with you, at war with whoever is at war with you, a friend to whoever befriends you, and an enemy to whoever is your enemy.

fa-asʾalu llāha lladhī akramanī bi-maʿrifatikum wa-maʿrifati awliyāʾikum wa-razqanī l-barāʾata min aʿdāʾikum an yajʿalanī maʿakum fī d-dunyā wa-l-ākhirati wa-an yuthabbita lī ʿindakum qadama ṣidqin fī d-dunyā wa-l-ākhirati.

I ask Allah, who honored me with knowledge of you and knowledge of your friends, and granted me disavowal of your enemies, to place me with you in this world and the Hereafter, and to establish for me with you a firm footing of truth in this world and the Hereafter.

wa-asʾaluhu an yuballighanī l-maqāma l-maḥmūda lakum ʿinda llāhi wa-an yarzuqanī ṭalaba thārikum maʿa imāmin mahdiyyin nāṭiqin lakum.

And I ask Him to bring me to the praiseworthy station that you hold with Allah, and to grant me the seeking of your vengeance alongside a rightly guided Imam who will speak on your behalf.

wa-asʾalu llāha bi-ḥaqqikum wa-bi-sh-shaʾni lladhī lakum ʿindahu an yuʿṭiyanī bi-muṣābī bikum afḍala mā aʿṭā muṣāban bi-muṣībatihi.

And I ask Allah, by your right and by the standing that you have with Him, to give me, for my affliction at your loss, the best of what He has given any afflicted one for his affliction.

aqūlu: innā lillāhi wa-innā ilayhi rājiʿūn.

I say: “Indeed, we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we shall return.”

yā lahā min muṣībatin, mā aʿẓamahā wa-aʿẓama raziyyatihā fī l-islāmi wa-fī jamīʿi s-samāwāti wa-l-arḍīna.

What a calamity—how great it is, and how great its tragedy in Islam and in all the heavens and the earths!

allāhumma ijʿalnī fī maqāmī hādhā mimman tanāluhu minka ṣalawātun wa-raḥmatun wa-maghfiratun.

O Allah, make me, in this station of mine, among those whom blessings, mercy, and forgiveness from You reach.

allāhumma ijʿal maḥyāya maḥyā muḥammadin wa-āli muḥammadin wa-mamātī mamāta muḥammadin wa-āli muḥammadin.

O Allah, make my life the life of Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, and my death the death of Muhammad and the family of Muhammad.

allāhumma inna hādhā yawmun tanazzalat fīhi al-laʿnatu ʿalā āli Ziyādin wa-āli Umayyata wa-bni ākilati al-akbādi, al-laʿīni bni al-laʿīni ʿalā lisāni nabiyyika, fī kulli mawṭinin wa-mawqifin waqafa fīhi nabiyyuka ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-ālihi.

O Allah, this is a day upon which the curse descended upon the house of Ziyad and the house of Umayyah, and upon the son of the eater of livers—the accursed, son of the accursed—on the tongue of Your Prophet, in every place and station in which Your Prophet, may Allah bless him and his Household, stood.

allāhumma al-ʿan Abā Sufyāna wa-Muʿāwiyata.

O Allah, curse Abu Sufyan and Mu‘awiya.

wa-ʿalā Yazīda bni Muʿāwiyata al-laʿnatu abada al-ābidīna.

And upon Yazid ibn Mu‘awiya be the curse, forever and ever.

allāhumma fa-ḍāʿif ʿalayhimu al-laʿnata abadan li-qatlihimu al-Ḥusayna ʿalayhi al-salāmu.

O Allah, then multiply the curse upon them forever, for their killing of al-Husayn, peace be upon him.

allāhumma innī ataqarrabu ilayka fī hādhā al-yawmi wa-fī mawqifī hādhā wa-ayyāmi ḥayātī bil-barāʾati minhum wa-al-laʿnati ʿalayhim wa-bil-muwālāti li-nabiyyika wa-ahli bayti nabiyyika, ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-ʿalayhim ajmaʿīna.

O Allah, I seek nearness to You on this day, in this place of my standing, and in the days of my life, through disavowal of them and cursing of them, and through loyalty to Your Prophet and the household of Your Prophet—may Allah bless him and all of them.

thumma taqūlu miʾata marratin:

Then you say one hundred times:

Allāhumma l-ʿan awwala ẓālimin ẓalama ḥaqqa Muḥammadin wa-āli Muḥammadin wa-ākhira tābiʿin lahu ʿalā dhālika.

O Allah, curse the first oppressor who wronged the right of Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, and the last one who followed him therein.

Allāhumma l-ʿani l-ʿiṣābata llatī ḥārabati l-Ḥusayna wa-shāyaʿat wa-tābaʿat aʿdāʾahu ʿalā qatlihi wa-qatli anṣārihi.

O Allah, curse the band that fought al-Husayn, sided with his enemies, and followed them in killing him and killing his supporters.

Allāhumma l-ʿanhum jamīʿan.

O Allah, curse them all.

Thumma taqūlu miʾata marratin:

Then you say one hundred times:

Al-salāmu ʿalayka yā Abā ʿAbdillāh wa-ʿalā l-arwāḥi llatī ḥallat bi-fināʾika wa-anākhat bi-raḥlika.

Peace be upon you, O Abu Abd Allah, and upon the souls that alighted in your courtyard and settled at your camp.

ʿAlaykum minnī salāmu llāhi abadan mā baqītu wa-baqiya l-laylu wa-l-nahār.

Upon you, from me, be Allah’s peace forever, as long as I remain and night and day remain.

Wa-lā jaʿalahu llāhu ākhira l-ʿahdi min ziyāratikum.

And may Allah not make it the last of my visits to you.

Al-salāmu ʿalā l-Ḥusayni wa-ʿalā ʿAliyyi bni l-Ḥusayni wa-ʿalā aṣḥābi l-Ḥusayni, ṣalawātu llāhi ʿalayhim ajmaʿīn.

Peace be upon al-Husayn, upon Ali ibn al-Husayn, and upon the companions of al-Husayn—may Allah’s blessings be upon them all.

thumma taqūlu marratan wāḥidatan:

Then you say once:

allāhumma khuṣṣ anta awwala ẓālimin ẓalama ʾāla nabiyyika bi-l-laʿni.

O Allah, do You single out with the curse the first oppressor who wronged the family of Your Prophet.

thumma l-ʿan ʾaʿdāʾa ʾāli muḥammadin mina l-ʾawwalīna wa-l-ʾākhirīna.

Then curse the enemies of the family of Muhammad, from the first and the last.

allāhumma l-ʿan yazīda wa-ʾabāhu wa-l-ʿan ʿubayda llāhi bna ziyādin wa-ʾāla marwāna wa-banī ʾumayyata qāṭibatan ʾilā yawmi l-qiyāmati.

O Allah, curse Yazid and his father, curse Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad, the house of Marwan, and the Banu Umayyah, all of them, until the Day of Resurrection.

thumma tasjudu sajdatan taqūlu fīhā:

Then you prostrate, and in your prostration you say:

allāhumma laka l-ḥamdu ḥamda sh-shākirīna ʿalā muṣābihim.

O Allah, to You be praise—the praise of those who give thanks for their affliction.

al-ḥamdu lillāhi ʿalā ʿaẓīmi raziyyatī fīhim.

Praise be to Allah for the greatness of my affliction in them.

allāhumma rzuqnī shafāʿata l-ḥusayni yawma l-wurūdi.

O Allah, grant me the intercession of al-Husayn on the Day of Arrival.

wa-thabbit lī qadama ṣidqin ʿindaka maʿa al-ḥusayni wa-aṣḥābi al-ḥusayni alladhīna badhalū muhajahum dūna al-ḥusayni ʿalayhi al-salāmu.

And establish for me a firm footing of truth with You, along with al-Husayn and the companions of al-Husayn, who sacrificed their lives in defense of al-Husayn, peace be upon him.
