Chapter on Innovations, Personal Opinions and Analogies

11. Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from al-Washsha’ from Muthanna al-Hannat from Abu Basir who has said the following: “I asked Abu ‘Abdillah عليه السلام, 'There come to us matters which we do not find in the Book of Allah or in the Sunnah, so we consider them (using our opinion).' He عليه السلام said, 'No, indeed, if you are correct, you will not be rewarded, and if you are wrong, you will have lied against Allah, the Mighty and Majestic.'"”
