18. My father and my brother both narrated to me from Aḥmad ibn Idrīs, and from Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā, from ‘Amraki ibn ‘Ali Al-Būfaki, from Yaḥyā – who was the servant of Abī Ja’far the Second (Imam Jawād عليه السلام), from ‘Ali (ibn Ḥakam Al-Kūfi), from Safwān Al-Jammāl, who said: I asked Abā ‘Abdillāh (Imam Sādiq عليه السلام) on the route from Madīnah to Makkah, “O son of the Messenger of Allāh! Why do I see you so depressed, saddened, and grieved?” Imam عليه السلام replied, “If you could hear that which I hear, you would have been distracted from asking me this question.” I asked, “What do you hear?” Imam عليه السلام replied: (I hear the voice of) the angels beseeching Allāh, the Great and Almighty, to curse the killers of the Commander of the Believers and the killers of Ḥusain عليه السلام. And (I hear the voice of) lamentation of the Jinn and the intense restlessness and weeping of the angels who are around him (Imam Ḥusain عليه السلام). So who can enjoy food, drink, or sleeping after hearing these voices?!
