Al-Imāma wa’l-Tabṣira min al-Ḥayra

عليّ بن إبراهيم، عن أبيه، عن محمّد بن أبي عمير، عن محمّد بن حمران أو غيره: عن أبي الحسن موسى عليه السلام: قال: قلت له: أكان عبداللّه إماماً؟ فقال: لم يكن كذلك، ولا أهل لذلك، ولا موضع ذاك.

ʿAlī b. Ibrāhīm, from his father, from Muḥammad b. Abī ʿUmayr, from Muḥammad b. Ḥumrān, or someone else, from Abī’l-Ḥasan Mūsā (as). The transmitter said: “I said to him (Imam al-Kāẓim (as)): “Was ʿAbd Allāh an Imam?” He replied: “He had never been such as that, nor was he befitting of that, nor was he suitable for that.”

وعنه، عن أبيه، عن محمّد بن أبي عمير، عن هشام بن سالم، قال: لما مضى أبو عبداللّه عليه السلام، ارتحلت إلى المدينة، والناس يدخلون على عبداللّه بن جعفر، فدخلت إليه، فقلت: أنت الإمام بعد أبيك؟ فقال: نعم. فقلت: إنّ الناس قد كتبوا عن أبيك أحاديث كثيرة، ويسألونك؟ فقال لي: سل. فقلت: أخبرني كم في مائتي درهم من زكاة؟ قال: خمسة دراهم. فقلت: ففي مائة؟ فقال: درهمين ونصف. فخرجت من عنده، ودخلت مسجد الرسول صلّى الله عليه وآله، وأبو الحسن موسى عليه السلام جالس، فجلست مقابله، وأنا أقول في نفسي: الى أين؟ الى أين؟ الى المرجئة؟ الى القدريّة؟ إلى الحروريّة؟ فقال أبو الحسن عليه السلام: إليّ لا إلى المرجئة، ولا إلى القدريّة، ولا إلى الحروريّة. فقمت، وقبلت رأسه.

And from him, from his father, from Muḥammad b. Abī ʿUmayr, from Hishām b. Sālim, who narrated: “When Abū ʿAbd Allāh (as) died, I traveled to Medina, while people were entering upon ʿAbd Allāh b. Jaʿfar. So, I went to him, and said: “Are you the Imam after your father?,” to which he replied: “Yes.” I continued: “People transmitted many traditions from your father, and they ask you questions (about that)?” He said: “Ask.” I inquired: “Inform me—how much is the alms-tax on two hundred dirhams?,” to which he responded: “Five dirhams.” I followed up: “And for a hundred?,” to which he replied: “Two and a half dirhams.”[1] I left him, and proceeded to enter the mosque of the Apostle of Allāh (sawa) in which Abū’l-Ḥasan Mūsā (as) was sitting, so I sat across from him. I was thinking to myself: “To where? To where? To the Murjiʾa? To the Qadariyya? To the Ḥarūriyya?”[2] Abū’l-Ḥasan (as) said to me: “To me! Not to the Murjiʾa, nor to the Qadariyya, nor to the Ḥarūriyya!” So I stood up and kissed him on the head.”

وعنه، عن أبيه، عن محمّد بن أبي عمير، عن بعض أصحابنا، قال: قلت لعبداللّه بن جعفر: أنت إمام؟ فقال: نعم. فقلت: إنّ الشيعة تروي: أنّ صاحب هذا الأمر يكون عنده سلاح رسول الله صلّى الله عليه وآله، فما عندك منه؟ فقال: عندي رمحه. ولم يعرف لرسول الله رمح.

And from him, from his father, from Muḥammad b. Abī ʿUmayr, from some of our companions, who narrated: “I said to ʿAbd Allāh b. Jaʿfar: “Are you the Imam?,” so he said: “Yes.” I continued: “Indeed, the Shīʿa have relayed that: “The Master of this Ordinance will have in his possession the weapon of the Apostle of Allāh (sawa).” So, what do you have of his?,” to which he replied: “I have his spear.” The Apostle of Allāh was not known to have possessed a spear.”

محمّد بن يحيى، عن محمّد بن الحسين، عن جعفر بن بشير، عن فضيل، عن طاهر: عن أبي عبداللّه عليه السلام، قال: كان يلوم عبداللّه، ويعاتبه، ويعظه ويقول: ما يمنعك أن تكون مثل أخيك؟ فوالله، إني لأعرف النور في وجهه. فقال عبداللّه: أليس أبي وأبوه واحداً، وأُمي وأُمّه واحدة؟ فقال أبو عبداللّه عليه السلام: إنّه من نفسي، وأنت ابني.

Muḥammad b. Yaḥyā, from Muḥammad b. al-Ḥusayn, from Jaʿfar b. Bashīr, from Fuḍayl, from Ṭāhir, from Abī ʿAbd Allāh (as). Ṭāhir narrated: “He was chiding ʿAbd Allāh and rebuking him, and admonishing him by saying: “What stops you from being like your brother? For by Allāh, I recognise the light in his face.” ʿAbd Allāh replied: “Are my father and his, and my mother and his, not the same?” So, Abū ʿAbd Allāh (as) stated: “Indeed, he is of my own soul, and you are my son.”[1]

وعنه، عن محمّد بن الحسين، عن وهيب بن حفص، عن أبي بصير، قال: كنت عند أبي عبداللّه عليه السلام، جالساً بمنى، فسألته عن مسألة، وعبداللّه جالس عنده، فقال أبو عبداللّه عليه السلام: يا أبا بصير، هيه الآن. فلمّا قام عبداللّه، قال أبو عبداللّه عليه السلام: تسألني، وعبداللّه جالس؟! فقال أبو بصير: وما لعبداللّه؟ قال: مرجئ صغير.

And from him, from Muḥammad b. al-Ḥusayn, from Wuhayb b. Ḥafṣ, from Abī Baṣīr, who said: “I was with Abī ʿAbd Allāh (as), sitting at Minā, whereupon I asked him about an issue while ʿAbd Allāh was sitting with him. So, Abū ʿAbd Allāh (as) said: “O’ Abā Baṣīr, not now.” When ʿAbd Allāh stood up (and left), Abū ʿAbd Allāh (as) said: “You would ask me a question while ʿAbd Allāh is sitting?,” to which I replied: “And what is the matter with ʿAbd Allāh?” He said: “He is a little Murjiʾi.”[1]

وعنه، عن محمّد بن أحمد، عن علي بن إسماعيل، عن صفوان، عن عبداللّه بن مسكان، عن سليمان بن خالد، قال: كنّا عند أبي عبداللّه عليه السلام، فقال: كفّوا عما تسألون. فأمرنا بالسكوت، حتى قام عبداللّه وخرج من عنده، فقال لنا أبو عبداللّه عليه السلام: إنّه ليس على شيء ممّا أنتم عليه، وإني لبريء منه، برئ الله منه!

And from him, from Muḥammad b. Aḥmad, from ʿAlī b. Ismāʿīl, from Ṣafwān, from ʿAbd Allāh b. Muskān, from Sulaymān b. Khālid, who narrated: “We were with Abī ʿAbd Allāh (as), when he said: “Desist from your asking.” He ordered us to be quiet until ʿAbd Allāh stood up and left, whereupon Abū ʿAbd Allāh (as) told us: “He is not upon a thing of that upon which you are. Verily, I have disavowed him, and Allāh has disavowed him!”
