The Night Prayer

Commentary 1

Allah (swt), the Exalted, said to His Prophet (saws): "And during the night, pray Tahajjud beyond what is obligatory for you, so that your Lord (azj) may raise you to a praised station" (Surah Al-Isra 17:79). Thus, the night prayer (Tahajjud) became an obligation upon the Messenger of Allah (saws) due to the command of Allah (swt): 'And during the night, pray Tahajjud.' For others, however, it remains a Sunnah and a supererogatory act.

Hadith 1

The Prophet (saws) said in his advice to Imam Ali (a.s): "O’ Ali, adhere to the night prayer, adhere to the night prayer, adhere to the night prayer”.

Commentary 2

When you intend to perform it, begin by saying "Allahu Akbar" (God is the Greatest) seven times, praise Him seven times, then recite the opening supplication (Du'a Iftitah), and proceed to pray two units (Rak'ahs). In the first Rak'ah, recite Surah Al-Fatiha followed by Surah Al-Ikhlas ("Say: He is Allah (swt), the One"). In the second Rak'ah, recite Surah Al-Fatiha followed by Surah Al-Kafirun ("Say: O’ disbelievers"). For the remaining six Rak'ahs, you may recite whatever you wish; you may lengthen or shorten as you like.

Hadith 2

It is narrated: "Whoever recites Surah Al-Fatiha once and 'Qul Huwa Allahu Ahad' (Surah Al-Ikhlas) thirty times in each of the first two Rak'ahs of the night prayer, he will finish his prayer without any sin remaining between him and Allah (swt), the Mighty and Glorious, except that He forgives it”.

Commentary 3

In the two Rak'ahs of Shaf' (a pair prayer) and the single Rak'ah of Witr, recite 'Qul Huwa Allahu Ahad' (Surah Al-Ikhlas), and separate between the Shaf' and Witr prayers with the concluding Tasleem (salutation of peace).

Hadith 3

It is narrated : "Whoever recites in the Witr prayer the two protective chapters (Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas) and 'Qul Huwa Allahu Ahad' (Surah Al-Ikhlas), it will be said to him, 'Rejoice, O’ servant of Allah (swt), for Allah (swt) has accepted your Witr.'"

Commentary 4

The Qunoot (supplication) is to be performed in every two Rak'ahs, specifically in the second Rak'ah, before bowing (Ruku') and after the recitation, and it should be done aloud. The Qunoot is also performed in the Witr prayer before bowing. If you stand for prayer but do not have enough time to perform the entire night prayer as intended, then perform it in a summarized form, meaning recite only Surah Al-Fatiha in each Rak'ah. If you fear the approach of Fajr, perform two Rak'ahs and complete the Witr with a third. If Fajr has begun, perform the two Rak'ahs of Fajr prayer as soon as time permits. If you have managed to pray four Rak'ahs of the night prayer before Fajr, continue and complete the remaining prayers, whether Fajr has begun or not. There is a concession for offering the night prayer after Fajr has begun on occasion, but it should not become habitual. If you have missed the night prayer and have enough time upon waking to perform both the missed and current night's prayer, begin with the missed prayer and then perform the current one. If there is only enough time for one, perform the current night prayer so that neither becomes overdue, and then make up the missed prayer later, either on the next day or thereafter.
