Al-Husayn ibn Said from Bistam from Abu Abdillah عليه السلام, peace be upon him, who said: A man said to Imam al-Sadiq عليه السلام: “May I be your ransom, is it proper for a man to embrace his brother?” Imam عليه السلام said: “Yes. Indeed, when the Messenger of Allah سبحانه وتعالى, blessings on him and his family, conquered Khaybar, the news came to Him صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم that Ja’far عليه السلام had arrived. So Prophet صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم said: ‘By Allah سبحانه وتعالى, I do not know which of the two gladdens me more; the arrival of Ja’far عليه السلام or the conquest of Khaybar’.” Imam عليه السلام continued: “It was not long before Ja’far عليه السلام arrived. So the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and his family, leapt up, embraced him, and kissed him between his eyes.” The man then said to Imam al-Sadiq عليه السلام: “The four rak‘ahs, which I have heard the Messenger of Allah سبحانه وتعالى, may Allah سبحانه وتعالى bless him and his family, commanded Ja’far عليه السلام, peace be upon him, to pray?” Imam عليه السلام said: “When Ja’far عليه السلام, peace be upon him, arrived, Prophet صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم said to Imam عليه السلام: ‘O Ja’far, shall I not give you something? Shall I not grant you something? Shall I not bestow something upon you?’” Imam al-Sadiq عليه السلام continued: “So the people (around the Prophet صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم) became attentive, thinking that He صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم was going to give Ja’far عليه السلام gold or silver. Ja’far عليه السلام said: 'Yes, O Messenger of Allah سبحانه وتعالى.' Prophet صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم said: 'Pray four rak‘ahs, whenever you pray them, whatever is between them will be forgiven for you. If you are able to perform them every day, then do so. Otherwise, every two days, or every Friday, or every month, or every year. For indeed, what is between them will be forgiven for you.' Ja’far عليه السلام asked: 'How do I pray them?' Prophet صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم said: 'You begin the prayer, then recite, then say fifteen times while standing: ‘Subhana Allah, wal-hamdu lillah, wa la ilaha illa Allah, wa Allahu Akbar.’ Then when you bow, say that ten times. And when you raise your head from the bowing, ten times. And when you prostrate, ten times. And when you raise your head from the prostration, ten times. And when you prostrate the second time, ten times. And when you raise your head, ten times. That makes seventy-five (times per rak‘ah), which totals three hundred in four rak‘ahs, and that is one thousand and two hundred. And you recite in every rak‘ah: ‘Qul Huwa Allahu Ahad’ (Surah al-Ikhlas) and ‘Qul Ya ayyuhal-Kafirun’ (Surah al-Kafirun)”

Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Yahya from Ahmad ibn Abi Abdillah from Ali ibn Asbat from Ibrahim ibn Abi al-Bilad, who said: I (Ibrahim) asked Abu al-Hasan عليه السلام, peace be upon him: “What is the merit for one who performs the ‘Prayer of Ja’far عليه السلام’?” Imam عليه السلام said: “If his sins were as numerous as the sand of Alij and the foam of the sea, Allah سبحانه وتعالى would forgive them for him.” Ibrahim asked: “Is this for us?” Imam عليه السلام said: “And for whom else is it for, if not for you, specifically?” Imam عليه السلام said: “And So what should be recited in it?” Ibrahim said: “I alternate through the Qur'an.” Imam عليه السلام said: “No. Recite in it: ‘Idha zulzilati al-ardu’ (Surah al-Zalzalah), ‘Idha jaa nasrullah’ (Surah al-Nasr), ‘Inna anzalnahu fi laylat al-qadr’ (Surah al-Qadr), and ‘Qul huwa Allahu Ahad’ (Surah Ikhlas).”

And from him, from Yaqub ibn Yazid, from Ibn Abi Umayr, from Yahya ibn Imran, from Dhurayh, from Abu Abdillah عليه السلام, peace be upon him, who said: Imam al-Sadiq عليه السلام said: “If you wish, perform the ‘Prayer of Tasbih’ (Salat Ja’far al-Tayyar) at night, and if you wish, during the day. And if you wish, while traveling. And if you wish, make it part of your recommended (nafl) prayers. And if you wish, make it as the makeup (qadah) of an obligatory prayer.”

And in the narration of Ibrahim ibn Abd al-Hamid from Abu al-Hasan عليه السلام, peace be upon him: Imam al-Kadhim عليه السلام said: “In the first rak’ah, ‘Idha zulzilati’ (Surah al-Zalzalah) is recited; in the second, recite ‘al-Adiyat’ (Surah Al-'Adiyat); in the third, recite ‘Idha jaa nasrullah’ (Surah al-Nasr); and in the fourth, recite ‘Qul Huwa Allahu Ahad’ (Surah al-Ikhlas).” I asked: “What is its reward?” Imam عليه السلام said: “If his sins were as numerous as the sand of Alij, Allah سبحانه وتعالى would forgive them for him.” Then Imam عليه السلام looked at me and said: “This is only for you and your companions.” (meaning our Shia)

Muhammad ibn Yaqub from Ali ibn Ibrahim from his father from Muhassin ibn Ahmad from Aban, who said: I heard Abu Abdillah عليه السلام say: “Whoever is in a hurry, may pray the ‘Prayer of Ja’far’ in its basic form, then complete the tasbih (the prescribed glorifications) while he is going about his needs.” (meaning away from the prayer mat)

Muhammad ibn Yaqub from a group of our companions from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from al-Barqi from Sadan from Abdillah ibn Sinan from Abu Abdillah عليه السلام, peace be upon him, who said: Imam al-Sadiq عليه السلام said: “Whoever prays four rak’ahs, reciting in each rak’ah ‘Qul Huwa Allahu Ahad’ (Surah al-Ikhlas) fifty times, will not complete the prayer while there remains any sin between him and Allah سبحانه وتعالى.”

And from him, from Ali ibn Muhammad, with his chain of narration from one of the Imams عليه السلام, peace be upon them: Imam عليه السلام was asked regarding the saying of Allah سبحانه وتعالى, the Mighty and Majestic: “Indeed, the rising at night is strongest in impression and more upright in speech” (Surah Al Muzzammil 73:6) Imam عليه السلام said: “It is two rak’ahs after Maghrib in which you recite in the first rak’ah with the ‘Fatihat al-Kitab’ (Surah al-Fatihah) and ten (verses) from the beginning of Surah al-Baqarah, and the verse of submission (Ayat al-Sukhrah) from His عز وجل saying: ‘And your God is one God; there is no deity except Him, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate. Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the alternation of the night and the day’ up to His عز وجل saying: ‘Surely in that are signs for a people who use reason.’” (Surah Al Baqarah 2:163–164). (Imam عليه السلام then continued) “And (recite) fifteen times; ‘Qul Huwa Allahu Ahad’ (Surah Ikhlas), And in the second rak’ah, recite the ‘Fatihat al-Kitab’ (Surah al-Fatihah), and Ayat al-Kursi, and the end of Surah al-Baqarah from His عز وجل saying: ‘To Allah سبحانه وتعالى belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth’ (Surah Al Baqarah 2:284) until you complete the surah. And recite fifteen times; ‘Qul Huwa Allahu Ahad’ (Surah Ikhlas), Then supplicate after this with whatever you wish.” Imam عليه السلام said: “And whoever maintains it regularly, Allah سبحانه وتعالى will write for him with every prayer six hundred thousand pilgrimages (hajj).”
