Commentary 1

The Shaykh (Al-Mufid), may Allah (swt) have mercy on him, said: “There is no zakat on less than two hundred dirhams. When it reaches two hundred dirhams, then in it there are five dirhams. Then when it increases by forty dirhams, then in it there is one dirham. Then it continues according to this calculation.”

Hadith 1

Ali ibn al-Hasan narrated from Harun ibn Muslim from al-Qasim ibn Urwah from Abdullah ibn Bukayr from Zurarah from one of the two Imams (a.s), peace be upon them, who said: Imam (a.s) said: “There is no zakat on silver until it reaches two hundred dirhams. Then when it reaches two hundred dirhams, there are five dirhams due on it. If it increases beyond that, then according to that calculation: in every forty dirhams, one dirham. There is nothing due on the fractions. And there is no zakat on gold until it reaches twenty mithqals. Then when it reaches twenty mithqals, there is half a mithqal due on it. Then according to that calculation, when the wealth increases: in every forty dinars, one dinar.”

Hadith 2

Muhammad ibn Yaqub from Muhammad ibn Yahya from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from Uthman ibn Isa from Samaah from Abu Abdillah (a.s), peace be upon him, who said: Imam (a.s) said: “In every two hundred dirhams, there are five dirhams from silver; and if it is less, then there is no zakat upon you. And from gold, from every twenty dinars there is half a dinar; and if it is less, then there is nothing upon you.”

Hadith 3

Ali ibn al-Hasan ibn Faddal from Sindi ibn Muhammad from Aban ibn Uthman al-Ahmar from Muhammad al-Halabi from Abu Abdillah (a.s), peace be upon him, who said: Imam (a.s) said: “When forty dirhams are added to the two hundred dirhams, then there is one dirham due on them, and there is nothing due on anything less than forty.” So I (narrator) asked: “Then what is due on thirty-nine dirhams?” Imam (a.s) said: “There is nothing due on the thirty-nine dirhams.”

Hadith 4

Ali ibn al-Hasan from Muhammad ibn Ismail from Hammad ibn Isa from Umar ibn Udhaynah from Zurarah and Bukayr, the two sons of Ayan, that they both heard: Abu Ja’far (a.s), peace be upon him, said: “As for Zakat on gold, there is nothing due on anything less than twenty dinars. When it reaches twenty dinars, half a dinar is due on it. And there is nothing due on anything less than two hundred dirhams. When it reaches two hundred dirhams, five dirhams are due on it. Whatever exceeds that is calculated accordingly. On two hundred dirhams up to one dirham less than two hundred and forty dirhams, nothing more than five dirhams is due. Then when it reaches two hundred and forty dirhams, six dirhams are due. When it reaches two hundred and eighty dirhams, seven dirhams are due. Whatever exceeds that is calculated according to this same calculation. The same applies to gold. Zakat is only due on stored gold and silver once a full year has passed over it. As for anything over which a full year has not passed, there is nothing due on it.”
