A man is allowed to take from a woman who undergoes khulʿ more than the dowry he gave her, based on the saying of Allah
سبحانه وتعالى, the Mighty and Majestic: "If you fear that they will not uphold the limits of Allah
سبحانه وتعالى, then there is no blame upon them for what she gives to secure her release" (Surah Al-Baqarah
2:229). However, in the case of mubara'ah (mutual separation), he may only take less than the dowry he gave her, because the woman seeking khulʿ exceeds limits in her speech, unlike in mubara'ah.
