The Chapter of Ritual Baths (Ghusl)
Man Lā Yaḥḍuruh al-Faqīh|Volume 1|Book 1|Chapter 19
وَقَالَ رَجُلٌ لِلصَّادِقِ عَلَيْهِ اَلسَّلاَمُ إِنَّ لِي جِيرَاناً وَ لَهُمْ جَوَارٍ يَتَغَنَّيْنَ وَ يَضْرِبْنَ بِالْعُودِ فَرُبَّمَا دَخَلْتُ اَلْمَخْرَجَ فَأُطِيلُ اَلْجُلُوسَ اِسْتِمَاعاً مِنِّي لَهُنَّ فَقَالَ لَهُ اَلصَّادِقُ عَلَيْهِ اَلسَّلاَمُ «لاَ تَفْعَلْ» فَقَالَ وَ اَللَّهِ مَا هُوَ شَيْءٌ آتِيهِ بِرِجْلِي إِنَّمَا هُوَ سَمَاعٌ أَسْمَعُهُ بِأُذُنِي فَقَالَ لَهُ اَلصَّادِقُ عَلَيْهِ اَلسَّلاَمُ «تَاللَّهِ أَنْتَ أَ مَا سَمِعْتَ اَللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ يَقُولُ: « إِنَّ اَلسَّمْعَ وَ اَلْبَصَرَ وَ اَلْفُؤٰادَ كُلُّ أُولٰئِكَ كٰانَ عَنْهُ مَسْؤُلاً » فَقَالَ اَلرَّجُلُ كَأَنَّنِي لَمْ أَسْمَعْ بِهَذِهِ اَلْآيَةِ مِنْ كِتَابِ اَللَّهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ مِنْ عَرَبِيٍّ وَ لاَ عَجَمِيٍّ لاَ جَرَمَ أَنِّي قَدْ تَرَكْتُهَا وَ أَنَا أَسْتَغْفِرُ اَللَّهَ تَعَالَى فَقَالَ لَهُ اَلصَّادِقُ عَلَيْهِ اَلسَّلاَمُ «قُمْ فَاغْتَسِلْ وَ صَلِّ مَا بَدَا لَكَ فَلَقَدْ كُنْتَ مُقِيماً عَلَى أَمْرٍ عَظِيمٍ مَا كَانَ أَسْوَأَ حَالَكَ لَوْ مِتَّ عَلَى ذَلِكَ اِسْتَغْفِرِ اَللَّهَ تَعَالَى وَ اِسْأَلْهُ اَلتَّوْبَةَ مِنْ كُلِّ مَا يَكْرَهُ فَإِنَّهُ لاَ يَكْرَهُ إِلاَّ اَلْقَبِيحَ وَ اَلْقَبِيحَ دَعْهُ لِأَهْلِهِ فَإِنَّ لِكُلٍّ أَهْلاً.
(From Mas'adah ibn Ziyad) A man said to Imam Jafar ibn Muhammad Al-Sadiq عليه السلام: 'I have neighbors who have female maidservant singers who sing and play the lute. Sometimes I go to the restroom and prolong my stay to listen to them.' Al-Sadiq عليه السلام replied: 'Do not do that.' The man said: 'By Allah سبحانه وتعالى, I do not approach them with my feet; it is only that I listen with my ears.' Al-Sadiq عليه السلام responded: 'By Allah سبحانه وتعالى, have you not heard Allah سبحانه وتعالى, the Exalted, say: "Indeed, the hearing, the sight, and the heart—all of those will be questioned."' [Surah Al-Isra 17:36] The man said: 'It is as though I had never heard this verse from the Book of Allah سبحانه وتعالى, the Exalted, from an Arab or a non-Arab. Certainly, I will abandon it and seek Allah’s سبحانه وتعالى forgiveness.' Al-Sadiq عليه السلام said to him, 'Arise, perform ghusl (ritual bathing), and pray as much as you like, for you were persisting in a grave matter. How terrible would your state have been had you died in that condition! Seek Allah’s سبحانه وتعالى forgiveness and ask Him for repentance from everything He dislikes, for He dislikes only the repugnant things, and leave repugnant things to their people, for everything has its people.'
