Chapter on Guiding the Dying, Positioning Them at Death, Procedures for Their Final Moments, Washing Them, and Placing Them in Shrouds
أَخْبَرَنِي اَلشَّيْخُ عَنْ أَبِي اَلْقَاسِمِ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ يَعْقُوبَ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنِ اِبْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ حَمَّادٍ عَنِ اَلْحَلَبِيِّ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اَللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ اَلسَّلاَمُ قَالَ:« إِذَا أَتَيْتَ بِالْمَيِّتِ اَلْقَبْرَ فَسُلَّهُ مِنْ قِبَلِ رِجْلَيْهِ فَإِذَا وَضَعْتَهُ فِي اَلْقَبْرِ فَاقْرَأْ آيَةَ اَلْكُرْسِيِّ وَقُلْ بِسْمِ اَللَّهِ وَبِاللَّهِ وَفِي سَبِيلِ اَللَّهِ وَعَلَى مِلَّةِ رَسُولِ اَللَّهِ صَلَّى اَللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَ آلِهِ اَللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَ آلِهِ اَللَّهُمَّ اِفْسَحْ لَهُ فِي قَبْرِهِ وَ أَلْحِقْهُ بِنَبِيِّهِ مُحَمَّدٍ صَلَّى اَللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَ آلِهِ وَ قُلْ كَمَا قُلْتَ فِي اَلصَّلاَةِ عَلَيْهِ مَرَّةً وَاحِدَةً مِنْ عِنْدِ اَللَّهُمَّ إِنْ كَانَ مُحْسِناً فَزِدْ فِي إِحْسَانِهِ وَ إِنْ كَانَ مُسِيئاً فَاغْفِرْ لَهُ وَ اِرْحَمْهُ وَ تَجَاوَزْ عَنْهُ وَ اِسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُ مَا اِسْتَطَعْتَ» قَالَ« وَ كَانَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ اَلْحُسَيْنِ عَلَيْهِمَا اَلسَّلاَمُ إِذَا دَخَلَ اَلْقَبْرَ قَالَ «اَللَّهُمَّ جَافِ اَلْأَرْضَ عَنْ جَنْبَيْهِ وَ صَاعِدْ عَمَلَهُ وَ لَقِّهِ مِنْكَ رِضْوَاناً»».
The Shaykh narrated to me from Abu al-Qasim Ja‘far ibn Muhammad, from Muhammad ibn Ya‘qub, from ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim, from his father, from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr, from Hammad, from al-Halabi, from Abu ‘Abdullah عليه السلام:
Imam عليه السلام said: "When you bring the deceased to the grave, lower him gently from the side of his feet. When you place him in the grave, recite Ayat al-Kursi, and say: 'In the name of Allah سبحانه وتعالى, and by Allah سبحانه وتعالى, and in the way of Allah سبحانه وتعالى, and upon the faith of the Messenger of Allah سبحانه وتعالى (may Allah سبحانه وتعالى bless him and his family). O Allah سبحانه وتعالى, send blessings upon Muhammad and his family. O Allah سبحانه وتعالى, make his grave spacious for him and join him with his Prophet Muhammad (may Allah سبحانه وتعالى bless him and his family).' Then repeat what you said in the funeral prayer once, starting from: 'O Allah سبحانه وتعالى, if he was righteous, increase his righteousness; and if he was sinful, forgive him, have mercy on him, and pardon him. Seek forgiveness for him as much as you can.'" Imam عليه السلام also said: "When (Imam) Ali ibn al-Husayn عليه السلام entered the grave, Imam عليه السلام used to say: 'O Allah سبحانه وتعالى, lighten the earth around him, raise his deeds upward, and grant him Your سبحانه وتعالى pleasure.'"
