Narrated to me by the Shaykh (Al-Mufid), may Allah سبحانه وتعالى support him, from Abu Al-Qasim Ja'far bin Muhammad, from his father, from Sa'd bin Abdullah, from Ahmad bin Muhammad, from Ibrahim bin Abi Mahmoud, from Imam al-Ridha عليه السلام, who said:
(Narrator said) 'I heard Imam عليه السلام say regarding istinja (cleansing): ‘One should wash what is visible around the anus, but the fingertip should not be inserted into it.'
