Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Yahya, from Muhammad ibn al-Husayn, from Ibn Mahbub, from al-‘Ala’, from Muhammad ibn Muslim, who said:
I said to Abu Ja‘far عليه السلام, peace be upon him: "Shall I pray while statues (tamathil) are in front of me and I am looking at them?" Imam عليه السلام said: "No, throw a cloth over them. There is no problem if they are to your right, or your left, or behind you, or beneath your feet, or above your head. But if they are in the direction of the Qiblah, then cover them with a cloth and pray."
