Chapter on the Rulings of Congregational Prayer (the Minimum Number for Congregational Prayer, the Description of the Imam, Who Is to Be Followed and Who Is Not to Be Followed, Recitation Behind Both of Them, the Rulings of Those Led in Prayer, and Other Such Rulings Related to It)

Sa’ad ibn Abdillah narrated from Yaqub ibn Yazid, from Marwak ibn Ubayd, from Ahmad ibn al-Nadr, from a man, from Abu Ja’far عليه السلام, peace be upon him, who said: Imam al-Baqir عليه السلام said to me: “What do these people say about a man who has missed two rak’ahs with the imam (of prayer)?” I said: “They say he should recite ‘al-Hamd’ (Surah al-Fatihah) and a surah in the two rak’ahs.” Imam عليه السلام said: “This one reverses his prayer he makes its beginning into its end.” So I asked: “Then what should he do?” Imam عليه السلام said: “He should recite Surah al-Fatihah in each rak’ah.”
