Tahdhīb al-Aḥkām|Volume 3|Book 2|Chapter 10
Al-Husayn ibn Sa’id from Fadalah from Kulayb al-Asadi said:
I asked Abu Abdillah عليه السلام, peace be upon him, about the takbir (declaration of ‘Allahu Akbar’) over the deceased. Imam عليه السلام gestured with his hand five times. I asked: “Then what should I say when I pray over him?” Imam عليه السلام said: “You say; ‘O’ Allah سبحانه وتعالى, Your servant has become in need of Your mercy, and You are free of any need to punish him. O’ Allah سبحانه وتعالى, if he was a doer of good, then increase his good deeds, and if he was a wrongdoer, then forgive him’.”
