Tahdhīb al-Aḥkām|Volume 3|Book 2|Chapter 10
الحسين بن سعيد عن محمد بن ابي عمير عن حماد بن عثمان وهشام بن سالم عن ابي عبد الله عليه السلام قال كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله يكبر على قوم خمسا وعلى آخرين أربعا فإذا كبر على رجل أربعا اتهم
Al-Husayn ibn Sa’id from Muhammad ibn Abi ‘Umayr from Hammad ibn Uthman and Hisham ibn Salim from Abu Abdillah عليه السلام, peace be upon him, who said:
Imam al-Sadiq عليه السلام said: “The Messenger of Allah سبحانه وتعالى, may Allah سبحانه وتعالى bless him and his family, used to pronounce five takbirs (of Salat Al Mayyit) over some people and four over others. So if He صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم pronounced four takbirs over a man, he would be regarded with suspicion.” (meaning it was commanded to Prophet صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم to recite four takbir over the deceased hypocrites)
