Chapter on What Is Lawful for Banu Hashim and Unlawful from Zakat

Muhammad ibn Yaqub, from Muhammad ibn Ismail, from al-Fadl ibn Shadhan, from Safwan, from Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Hajjaj, from Jafar ibn Ibrahim al-Hashimi, from Abu Abdillah عليه السلام, peace be upon him, who said: I (narrator) said: “Is charity lawful for Banu Hashim?” Imam عليه السلام said: “That is only the obligatory charity upon the people; it is not lawful for us (Banu Hashim). As for other than that, there is no harm in it. And if it were like that, they (Banu Hashim) would not be able to go out to Mecca; these waters, most of them, are charity.”
