Abu Jafar Muhammad ibn Ali ibn al-Husayn ibn Babawayh, from Abd al-Wahid ibn Muhammad ibn Abdus al-Naysaburi, from Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Qutaybah, from Hamdan ibn Sulayman, from Abd al-Salam ibn Salih al-Harawi, who said:
I (narrator) said to Imam al-Ridha عليه السلام, peace be upon him: “O son of the Messenger of Allah سبحانه وتعالى, it has been narrated from your fathers عليه السلام, peace be upon them, regarding ‘one who has intercourse in the month of Ramadan or breaks his fast in it, that there are three expiations, and it has also been narrated from them, that there is one expiation. So by which of the two hadiths should we act?’” Imam عليه السلام said: “By both of them together. Whenever a man has unlawful intercourse, or breaks his fast upon something unlawful, in the month of Ramadan, then upon him are three expiations: freeing a slave, fasting two consecutive months, and feeding sixty needy persons, and making up that day. But if he has married lawfully, or breaks his fast upon something lawful, then upon him is one expiation. And if he was forgetful, then there is nothing upon him.”
