Chapter on One Who Becomes Muslim in Month of Ramadan, and the Ruling of One Who Reaches Puberty in It, and One Who Dies after Having Fasted Part of It or Not Having Fasted Anything from It

And from him, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad, from Ali ibn al-Hakam, from Muhammad ibn Yahya, from Abu Basir, from Abu Abdillah عليه السلام, peace be upon him, who said: I (narrator) asked Imam عليه السلام about ‘a woman who became sick in (month of) Ramadan and died in the month of Shawwal, and she instructed me to make it up on her behalf.’ Imam عليه السلام said: “Did she recover from her illness?” I (narrator) said: “No, she died in it.” Imam عليه السلام said: “It is not made up on her behalf, for Allah سبحانه وتعالى did not place it upon her.” I (narrator) asked: “But I desire to make it up on her behalf, and she instructed me to do that.” Imam عليه السلام said: “So how can you make up something which Allah سبحانه وتعالى did not place upon her? If you desire to fast for yourself, then fast.”
