Chapter on Ruling of Treatment for the Fasting Person, Kohl, Cupping, the Tooth-Stick (Siwak), Entering the Bathhouse, and Other than That

As for what al-Husayn ibn Said narrated from al-Hasan ibn Ali, who said: I (narrator) asked Abu al-Hasan عليه السلام, peace be upon him, about ‘the fasting person, when his eye pains him, whether he may apply eye powder (al-dharur) and what resembles it, such as ‘kohl’, or whether that is not permissible for him.’ Imam عليه السلام said: “He should not apply kuhl.” – meaning the eye-powder (kuhl) or its sharp scent may enter the throat, for that is disliked.
