Chapter on the Description of Ablution (Wudu)

Hadith #40

وَ بِهَذَا اَلْإِسْنَادِ عَنِ اَلْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ عَنِ اِبْنِ أَبِي عُمَيْرٍ عَنِ اِبْنِ أُذَيْنَةَ عَنْ زُرَارَةَ وَ بُكَيْرٍ اِبْنَيْ أَعْيَنَ: أَنَّهُمَا سَأَلاَ أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ عَلَيْهِ اَلسَّلاَمُ عَنْ وُضُوءِ رَسُولِ اَللَّهِ صَلَّى اَللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَ آلِهِ فَدَعَا بِطَسْتٍ أَوْ تَوْرٍ فِيهِ مَاءٌ ثُمَّ حَكَى وُضُوءَ رَسُولِ اَللَّهِ صَلَّى اَللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَ آلِهِ إِلَى أَنِ اِنْتَهَى إِلَى آخِرِ مَا قَالَ اَللَّهُ تَعَالَى« وَ اِمْسَحُوا بِرُؤُسِكُمْ وَ أَرْجُلَكُمْ إِلَى اَلْكَعْبَيْنِ»« فَإِذَا مَسَحَ بِشَيْءٍ مِنْ رَأْسِهِ أَوْ بِشَيْءٍ مِنْ رِجْلَيْهِ( قدميه) مَا بَيْنَ اَلْكَعْبَيْنِ إِلَى آخِرِ أَطْرَافِ اَلْأَصَابِعِ فَقَدْ أَجْزَأَهُ» قُلْنَا أَصْلَحَكَ اَللَّهُ فَأَيْنَ اَلْكَعْبَانِ قَالَ« هَاهُنَا» يَعْنِي اَلْمَفْصِلَ دُونَ عَظْمِ اَلسَّاقِ فَقَالاَ هَذَا مَا هُوَ قَالَ «هَذَا عَظْمُ اَلسَّاقِ».

Udhaynah, from Zurarah and Bukayr, the sons of Aʿyan: They asked Abu Jaʿfar about the ablution (Wuduʾ) of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family). Imam requested a basin or bowl with water, then demonstrated the ablution of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) until Imam reached the part where Allah , the Exalted, says: “And wipe your heads and your feet up to the ankles.” (Surah Al-Ma'idah 5:6) Imam said: "If one wipes any part of his head or any part of his feet (up to the ankles), from between the ankles to the ends of the toes, it suffices him." We said: "May Allah make you prosper; where are the ankles?" Imam said: "Here," pointing to the joint below the shinbone and above the foot. They said: "This is not it; what is this?" Imam said: "This is the shinbone."
