Chapter on the Manner of Prayer, Its Description and What is Obligatory and Recommended
عَنْهُ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ اَلْحَكَمِ عَنْ زُرْعَةَ عَنْ اَلْمُفَضَّلِ بْنِ عُمَرَ قَالَ: قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اَللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ اَلسَّلاَمُ أَقُومُ وَ أَنَا أَشُكُّ فِي اَلْفَجْرِ فَقَالَ« صَلِّ عَلَى شَكِّكَ فَإِذَا طَلَعَ اَلْفَجْرُ فَأَوْتِرْ وَ صَلِّ اَلرَّكْعَتَيْنِ وَ إِذَا أَنْتَ قُمْتَ وَ قَدْ طَلَعَ اَلْفَجْرُ فَابْدَأْ بِالْفَرِيضَةِ وَ لاَ تُصَلِّ غَيْرَهَا فَإِذَا فَرَغْتَ فَاقْضِ مَا فَاتَكَ وَ لاَ تَكُونُ هَذِهِ عَادَةً وَ إِيَّاكَ أَنْ تُطْلِعَ عَلَى هَذَا أَهْلَكَ فَيُصَلُّونَ عَلَى ذَلِكَ وَ لاَ يُصَلُّونَ بِاللَّيْلِ»
From him, from Ali ibn al-Hakam, from Zur‘ah, from al-Mufaddal ibn ‘Umar, who said:
I said to Abu Abdillah عليه السلام, peace be upon him: “I rise while I am uncertain about the time of dawn.” Imam عليه السلام said: "Pray based on your uncertainty. Then, when dawn appears, perform the Witr, and pray the two rak‘ahs. And if you rise and the dawn has already appeared, then begin with the obligatory prayer and do not perform anything else. Then, once you have finished, make up what you missed. And do not make this a habit. And beware of letting your family become aware of this, so that they pray in this manner and abandon the night prayer."
