Chapter on the Prayer over the Dead

Ali ibn al-Husayn, from Ahmad ibn Idris, from Muhammad ibn Sinan, from Ahmad ibn al-Nadr, from Amr ibn Shimr, from Jabir, from Abu Ja’far عليه السلام, peace be upon him, said: I said to Imam al-Baqir عليه السلام: “What do you say if I miss a takbir or more (of Salat Al Mayyit)?” Imam عليه السلام said: “Make up what you missed.” Iasked: “Should I face the qiblah?” Imam عليه السلام said: “Yes, while you are following the funeral. Indeed, the Messenger of Allah سبحانه وتعالى, may Allah سبحانه وتعالى bless him and his family, went out for the funeral of a woman from Banu Najjar and prayed over her. Then Prophet صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم found the grave had not yet been prepared, so they placed the bier down. And whenever a group came, He صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم, may Allah سبحانه وتعالى bless him and his family, would say to them; ‘Pray over her’.”
