Chapter on the Virtue of Mosques and Prayer Within Them, and the Virtue of Congregational Prayer and Its Rulings

From him, from al-Abbas from Abdillah ibn al-Mughirah from Ibn Sinan from Abu Abdillah عليه السلام, who said: Imam al-Sadiq عليه السلام said: “The Messenger of Allah سبحانه وتعالى, performed the noon (Dhuhr) and afternoon (Asr) prayers and shortened the prayer in the last two rak‘ahs. When Prophet صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم finished, the people said to Him صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم: ‘O Messenger of Allah سبحانه وتعالى, has something occurred in the prayer?’ Prophet صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم said: “And what is that?” They said: “You shortened the last two rak‘ahs.” So Prophet صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم said to them: “Did you not hear the cry of the child?’”
