Chapter on the Virtue of Mosques and Prayer Within Them, and the Virtue of Congregational Prayer and Its Rulings

And Umar ibn Yazid asked Abu Abdillah عليه السلام, peace be upon him, about the narration which they transmit that ‘it is not proper to perform recommended prayers (al-tatawwu') at the time of an obligatory prayer’, What is the limit of this time? Imam al-Sadiq عليه السلام said: "When the muqim (the one who gives the iqamah) begins the iqamah." So he (Umar ibn Yazid) asked Imam عليه السلام: “Indeed, people differ in the iqamah”. Imam عليه السلام said: "The iqamah is that with which you pray along with them."
