Tahdhīb al-Aḥkām|Volume 4|Book 1|Chapter 19
Hammad, from Hariz, from Zurarah, who said:
I (narrator) said to Abu Abdillah عليه السلام, peace be upon him: “Is there anything due upon mules?” Imam عليه السلام said: “No.” So I (narrator) asked: “How has it become due upon horses but not become due upon mules?” Imam عليه السلام said: “Because mules do not conceive, while female horses give birth, and there is nothing due upon male horses.” He (narrator) said: “I asked: ‘Is there anything due upon a horse or a camel which belongs to a man and which he rides?’” Imam عليه السلام said: “No. There is nothing due upon that which is fed with fodder. Charity is only upon freely grazing livestock (al-saimah), released in its pasture during the year in which the man keeps it. As for other than that, there is nothing due in it.”
