Chapter on Ruling of the Traveller and the Sick Person Regarding Fasting

And from him, from Muhammad ibn al-Walid, from Yunus, from Abu Abdillah عليه السلام, peace be upon him: (Imam عليه السلام was asked) regarding ‘a man performing tamattu (mutamatti) who did not have a sacrificial offering (hady) with him.’ Imam عليه السلام said: “He fasts three days: one day before al-Tarwiyah, the Day of al-Tarwiyah, and the Day of Arafah.” He (narrator) said: “So I said to Imam عليه السلام, ‘When the Day of al-Tarwiyah enters, and it is not proper for him to fast in Mina during the days of al-Tashriq.’” Imam عليه السلام said: “Then when he returns to Makkah, he fasts.” He (narrator) said: “I asked, ‘But if his companions hasten him and refuse to stay in Makkah?’” Imam عليه السلام said: “Then let him fast on the road.” He (narrator) said: “I asked, ‘Then he fasts while travelling?’” Imam عليه السلام said: “That is it; he fasts on the Day of Arafah, and the people of Arafah are travelling.”
