Chapter on Ruling of the Forgetful One and the Mistaken One Regarding Fasting

Al-Husayn ibn Said, from Muhammad ibn Abi Umayr, from Hammad, from al-Halabi, from Abu Abdillah عليه السلام: Imam عليه السلام was asked about ‘a man who ate the pre-dawn meal, then left his house when dawn had already risen and become clear.’ Imam عليه السلام said: “He completes that fast, then let him make it up (qada). And if he ate the pre-dawn meal outside the month of Ramadan after the rising of dawn, he has broken the fast.” Then Imam عليه السلام said: “Indeed, one night my father (Imam al-Baqir عليه السلام) was praying while I was eating, then he turned away and said: ‘As for Ja’far عليه السلام, he has eaten and drunk after dawn.’ So he (Imam al-Baqir عليه السلام) ordered me, and I broke the fast of that day outside the month of Ramadan.”
