Chapter on Ruling of the Forgetful One and the Mistaken One Regarding Fasting

Muhammad ibn Yaqub, from Muhammad ibn Yahya, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad, from Uthman ibn Isa, from Samaah ibn Mihran, who said: I asked Imam عليه السلام about ‘a man who ate or drank after dawn had risen in Ramadan.’ Imam عليه السلام said: “If he had risen and looked, and did not see the dawn, so he ate, then returned and saw the dawn, then let him complete his fast, and there is no repetition (qada) upon him. But if he had risen and eaten or drunk, then looked toward the dawn and saw that it had risen, then let him complete his fast and make up another day, because he began with eating before looking, so repetition (qada) is upon him.”
