The Signs of the Mahdī’s Reappearance

Al-Ḥimyarī, from Muḥammad b. ʿĪsā, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī Hāshim, from Abī Yaḥyā al-Madīnī, from Abī ʿAbd Allāh عليه السلام, who said: “A Jew came to ʿUmar, asking him about some issues, whereupon he directed him to ʿAlī عليه السلام so that he may ask him instead. So, ʿAlī عليه السلام said to him: “Ask.” The Jew said: “Inform me. How many just Imams are there, after your Prophet? In which Garden is he, and who will dwell with him in his Garden?” So, ʿAlī عليه السلام responded to him: “O’ Aaronite! [1] For Muḥammad صلى الله عليه وعلى آله there are twelve just Imams after him. The abandonment of whoever abandons them does not harm them, nor do they become lonely on account of the opposition of those who oppose them. They are more grounded in Allāh’s religion than the firmly moored mountains. And the dwelling of Muḥammad صلى الله عليه وعلى آله is the Garden of Eden, and those who reside with him therein, in tranquility, are these twelve.” So, the man accepted Islam, and said (to ʿAlī صلوات الله عليه): “You are more worthy of this assembly than this one.[2] You are the one who surpasses without being surpassed, and the one who excels without anyone transcending your excellence.”
