Muhammad ibn Yaqub, from a number of our companions, from Sahl ibn Ziyad, from Mansur ibn al-Abbas, from Muhammad ibn Abdullah ibn Rafi, from Ismail ibn Sahl, from a man, from Abu Abdillah عليه السلام: Abu Abdillah عليه السلام left Madinah during days remaining from Shaban, and he was fasting. Then the month of Ramadan entered upon the Imam عليه السلام while he was travelling, so the Imam عليه السلام broke the fast. It was said to Imam عليه السلام: “Do you fast Shaban and break the fast in the month of Ramadan?” Imam عليه السلام said: “Yes. Shaban is up to me; if I wish, I fast it, and if I wish, I do not. But the month of Ramadan is a firm obligation from Allah سبحانه وتعالى, Mighty and Majestic, to break the fast.”
